Seven year deal will see Safran take on maintenance support of German NH90 RTM322 engines, formerly a joint venture with Safran and Rolls Royce, Safran now owns the engine type, adding to their already substantial number of helicopter engines across the industry.
Safran Helicopter Engines has signed a 7-year support contract with BAAINBw (Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support) to support RTM322- powered NH90 operated by the German Army (Heer) and German Navy (Marine). This contract will support a total fleet of around 100 NH90 (82 TTH and 18 NTH).Formerly supported by previous RTM322 program shareholder local subsidiary, engines operated by German Armed Forces are now fully supported by Safran Helicopter Engines. This contract will provide maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) for this engine fleet. It will be managed by Safran Helicopter Germany.

The RTM 322 currently powers three types of helicopters: the NH90, a twin-engine military transport/naval frigate helicopter manufactured by NH Industries (a joint venture between Airbus Helicopters, AgustaWestland and Fokker Aerostructures); the AW101, a three-engine military transport built by AgustaWestland; and the Apache AH Mk.1 attack helicopter, a version of the AH-64D built under license by AgustaWestland.
The RTM 322 also powered Airbus Helicopters’ X3 technology demonstrator. To date, the RTM 322 powers 90% of the world’s fleet of AW101 helicopters and 80% of in-service NH90s. It is used by the air forces of fifteen nations: France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Belgium, Japan, Oman, New Zealand and Australia.
The RTM 322 was the result of a joint development between Safran Helicopter Engines and British manufacturer Rolls-Royce. An initial variant was qualified in 2003 for the British Ministry of Defence. It has since been certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
In 2013, Safran Helicopter Engines acquired the entire RTM 322 program. The engine is now 100% Safran, with the French manufacturer responsible for both production and product support . The acquisition has enabled Safran Helicopter Engines to strengthen its position in the high-power segment of the market, in preparation for the upcoming launch of the HPE (High-Power Engine) family of turbines within the 2,500 – 3,000+ shp bracket.
